Knowing the origin of the products we market is an essential part of our commitment to our customers. With this objective in mind, the frozen division of Barrufet Seafood, BarruFrost, recently travelled to Denmark to visit the processing facilities of two of our main scampi suppliers, located on the island of Læsø and in Hirtshals.
The visit gave us the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into their production processes, strengthen a business relationship built on trust, quality and continuous improvement, and identify new opportunities for development so that we can continue offering products that meet our customers’ needs.
Denmark is one of Europe’s leading references for the catching and processing of scampi Nephrops norvegicus), a species of great gastronomic and commercial value.
The waters of the Skagerrak and Kattegat provide optimal conditions for this species, while its exploitation is carried out under a strict European quota system that guarantees the sustainability of fishery resources and the preservation of marine ecosystems, helping to secure the future of this activity and the long-term availability of the product.
Working directly with specialized suppliers allows us to ensure full product traceability, controlled production processes and high standards of quality and sustainability that define the Danish scampi sector.
The first stop of our trip took us to the island of Læsø in the North Sea, a community with a long fishing tradition and a processing plant dedicated exclusively to scampi for more than fifty years.
The facility works with daily catches from MSC-certified fisheries (Marine Stewardship Council, the international benchmark for responsible fishing), and the product is processed and ultra-frozen in just six minutes, preserving its freshness, texture and quality to the highest level.
Commitment to sustainability, traceability, quality control, and respect for the marine environment are part of the company’s DNA and values that we fully share.
These visits were not only an opportunity to see the facilities first-hand, but also to strengthen relationships with companies that share our high standards in quality, sustainability and innovation, while allowing us to verify on-site the processes behind each product.
